This year, Eric and I have decided to try our hand at growing vegetables. It's something I've wanted to try for awhile, and I finally have the resources, time, and space to do so. Being the geeks that we are, we have a sizable Google document outlining what all has been planted and some pertinent information. For those of you who are especially curious, the information is as follows: Plant Name, Packet name (for repurchase in future years), Sun Requirements, Depth, Planting Distance, Radius, Height, Category, Garden Tag (for which garden it will ultimately be planted in), Indoor/Sow, Days to Harvest, Seeds, Seedlings, Stored, and Notes.
There are also sheets detailing how the plants are arranged in their starter trays, but this is significantly less exciting, and only useful until the plants are moved into the actual garden (probably next month). I've included a list below of what we are attempting to grow.
We're off to a good start, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I'm hoping to finish digging up the garden this week, so that next week we can install a wooden edging. We also need to plan out the garden; we will probably utilize a coordinate system in order to aid in further documentation. There are also plans to fertilize the soil with spent grains from Urban Chestnut, and ash from fires that have yet to happen. Finally, we hope to install a rainwater irrigation system and a composter, both utilizing barrels, in order to be as sustainable and self-sufficient with the garden as possible.
It's a long way to go, but for now, it's pretty cool to watch our little sprouts grow in the kitchen. I'll probably post picture in the coming days, and make some observations on what we've seen so far. Science is pretty amazing.
